The History of Alpha Epsilon Phi

Alpha Epsilon Phi was founded October 24, 1909 on the campus of Barnard College, in Morningside Heights, NYC. The original founders were seven friends who wanted to develop a society that would “inspire and support exemplary women dedicated to friendship.”

Historically, Alpha Epsilon Phi was a Jewish sorority, although it welcomes women of all backgrounds, religions, and viewpoints. Today, the sorority maintains more than 50 chapters nationwide.

When it comes to philanthropy, Alpha Epsilon Phi supports the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, which works to provide the funding and research needed to prevent pediatric HIV infection and reduce and eventually eradicate cases of pediatric AIDs. The sorority also supports Sharsheret, which uplifts and supports Jewish women suffering from breast cancer.

Notable graduates of Alpha Epsilon Phi include Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice, Lillian Copeland, Olympic silver and gold medalist, Nancy Goodman Brinker, the founder of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, Judith Resnik, the second American female astronaut, and Lauren Weisberger, prominent author of The Devil Wears Prada.
