The History of the Panhellenic Conference
The National Panhellenic Conference, or NPC, was founded in 1902. An umbrella organization that covers 26 Greek-letter societies, the NPC has members on more than 650 college campuses throughout the U.S. and Canada. These members span more than 4,600 alumnae organizations and include more than 4 million women of all ages.
Designed to provide guidance and support to its members, the NPC functions as the foremost voice for Greek-letter institutions when it comes to issues like sorority life. The NPC is also an active player in various philanthropic efforts, and has partnered with NPC-affiliated collegians to fundraise more than $5 million annually to designated causes. The Conference also provides upwards of $2.8 million in annual scholarships and spends more than 500,000 hours volunteering in local communities.
In 1947, the National Panhellenic Conference expanded greatly when it merged with the Association of Pedagogical Sororities, which was the umbrella organization for sororities on state campuses across the country. This merger set the stage for future acquisitions, all of which have served to make the National Panhellenic Conference stronger and more robust than ever before.
While the National Panhellenic Conference acts as the voice of its sororities, it does not enact legislation, except within its own meetings. Instead, NPC issues only advice and recommendations to the sororities it oversees. One of the primary ways it does this is by selecting and implementing qualified area advisors for College Panhellenics and Alumnae Panhellenics.
