The History of Alpha Kappa Psi

Alpha Kappa Psi was founded on the campus of New York University on October 5, 1904. Originally established as a restrictive men’s fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi began to shift between 1950-1970. Before 1950, the fraternity only allowed white, Christian men. That restriction had begun to stir up some controversy, though, and delegates voted to drop the membership clause in favor of making the fraternity more accepting to men from various backgrounds and faiths.

In 1972, the fraternity took another large shirt: it started allowing women into its ranks. Today, Alpha Kappa Psi operates as a co-ed professional business fraternity with 268 active chapters, 14,447 collegiate chapters, and more than 278,000 total lifetime members.

By the year 2000, the fraternity had expanded into the U.K., and by 2013 it developed a chapter in Hong Kong. Today, Alpha Kappa Psi is a robust, active fraternity with an impressive list of notable alumni, including Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Thomas Eagleton, Barry Goldwater, James Kenneth Logan, a former U.S. Court of Appeals Judge on the 10th Circuit, Gordon M. Metcalf, the CEO of Sears, Malcolm Steve Forbes Jr., Editor-in-Chief of Forbes, and Arthur E. Andersen, the Founder of Arthur Andersen. The list doesn’t stop there, though, and Alpha Kappa Psi members can be found in virtually every branch of technology, politics, finance, media, retail, aeronautics, construction, education, telecommunications, and entertainment.
