The History of Phi Mu

Phi Mu was founded on the campus of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia in 1852. One of the two original “Macon Magnolias,” Phi Mu’s sister sorority is Alpha Delta Phi. Today, the sorority maintains 123 collegiate chapters, 6 extending chapters, 145 alumnae chapters, and more than 180,000 active members. It works with philanthropic organizations including the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Since its inception, Phi Mu has worked to uplift and support women. Its motto is “The Faithful Sisters” and its uniting statement starts with the words, “To lend to those less fortunate a helping hand.” Deeply committed to philanthropy and community service, Phi Mu has a long track record of raising funds for its philanthropic causes.

For example, it raises upwards of $500,000 annually for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and has contributed more than $8.5 million over the years to causes that support sick and ailing children and their families.

Phi Mu also spearheaded National Philanthropy Day, which takes place each year in October.

Notable graduates from Phi Mu include Susan Harling, the inspiration for Steel Magnolias, Andi Dorfman, from the reality show The Bachelor, Jerrie Mock, the first woman to complete a solo flight around the world, and Mary Weber, a prominent astronaut.
