Alpha Omicron Pi

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded on January 2, 1897 at Barnard College on the campus of Columbia University in New York. The group accepts women of all ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds, leading to a diverse group of ladies that can freely share ideas and values. The group includes 143 active collegiate chapters and 159 alumnae chapters in both the U.S. and Canada.

The History of AOII

Alpha Omicron Pi was founded January 2, 1897 on the campus of Columbia University in New York. Established by four friends who met in the campus’s law library, the sorority has been dedicated to friendship, support, and good works since the beginning. Today, Alpha Omicron Pi welcomes women from all backgrounds, religions, and walks of life. The sorority maintains 138 active collegiate chapters, and 320 alumnae chapters, throughout the U.S. and Canada. The sorority’s official color is cardinal while its official symbol is the sheaf of wheat. When it comes to philanthropy, the organization supports Arthritis Research, given that arthritis is the leading cause of disability among women in the U.S. Since 1967, Alpha Omicron Pi has raised more than $2 million in funds, which it has passed along to various arthritis research and support organizations.

Notable alumnae of Alpha Omicron Pi include Wendy Chamberlain, the former U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, Ashley Crow, actress, Nancy Winifred Diehl Dear, a National Cowgirl Hall of Fame Inductee, and Courtney Kupets, Olympic Athlete.
