The History of Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded on March 9, 1856, on the campus of the University of Alabama. Today, its headquarters are at the Levere Memorial Temples on the campus of Northwestern University, located in Evanston, Illinois. With colonies in more than 50 states and provinces, Sigma Alpha Epsilon is a large fraternity with 317 chartered chapters, 219 active chapters, 21 colonies, 15,000 collegiate members, and more than 331,000 lifetime members.

The fraternity’s colors are royal purple and old gold, and the official symbol is the lion and phoenix. The Fraternity’s mission statement is “To promote the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, and service for our members, based upon the ideals set forth by our Founders and as specifically enunciated in ‘The True Gentleman.’"

Notable members of the fraternity include William Faulkner, Nobel Prize winning author, Walker Percy, Dierks Bentley, Nick Lachey, Danny Lee Clark, and Ed Wilson Ed Fuller, the President of Marriott International. The fraternity has also graduated members of the U.S. Senate, including Max Baucus, Jim DeMint, Mark Pryor, and Richard Russell.
