The History of Phi Kappa Psi
Phi Kappa Psi got its start 165 years ago, and currently has more than 119,000 initiated members. Its colors are cardinal red and hunter green, while its official flower is the Jacqueminot Rose. The organization has more than 100 chapters and 4 colonies throughout the U.S.
While most fraternities have a unique founding story, Phi Kappa Psi’s is something special: in the winter of 1850, typhoid fever swept through Jefferson College, forcing many students to leave the campus. Two men who chose to remain were William Henry Letterman and Charles Page Thomas Moore. After they found themselves still on campus, they dedicated their time to caring for their fellow students, who were ill. A strong friendship developed and, the next year, they developed the fraternity, with the stated mission of supporting “The great joy of serving others.”
Since then, Phi Kappa Psi has continued to do just that, supporting The Boys & Girls Clubs of America - its official philanthropy - and performing community-service works in its various communities annually.
