The History of Delta Zeta

Delta Zeta was founded on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in October of 1902. The third-largest sorority in the U.S., Delta Zeta has more than 200 alumnae chapters and 160 current collegiate chapters throughout the country.  The sorority has many notable alumnae, including Princess Martha of Sweden and Gail Patrick, notable producer of the Perry Mason television series.

While Delta Zeta is historic thanks to its 115-year history, it’s also notable because it was founded in the first year Miami University allowed women to attend. Established by six of the first women to walk through Miami University’s doors, Delta Zeta had a rocky start - drawing jeers and heckling from people who thought it was silly for the founding sisters to want to start a sorority.

Legend has it that one of the hecklers even went so far as to steal the constitution out of the secretary’s hand!

Despite its rocky beginning, Delta Zeta has enjoyed a strong run. Known for its philanthropic focus, Delta Zeta partners with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to support hearing and speech research throughout the country. Delta Zeta members are committed to spending time volunteering and taking an active stance to improve the communities in which they live.

The sorority is also well-known for the Delta Zeta Foundation, which operates as a not-for-profit entity furthering the national philanthropic goals and agendas of the Delta Zeta sorority throughout the country. To join, members are asked to pledge $19.02, a tribute to the year Delta Zeta was founded.
