The History of Alpha Phi Omega
Alpha Phi Omega was founded on the campus of Lafayette College on December 16, 1925. Known as a national co-ed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega is currently the largest collegiate fraternity in the U.S., boasting chapters at more than 350 campuses and more than 25,000 active student members. The fraternity also has more than 400,000 alumni members and chapters throughout the Philippines, Australia, and Canada. The fraternity first opened its doors to women in 1976.The mission of the fraternity is as follows: “to assemble college students in a National Service Fraternity in the fellowship of principles derived from the Scout Oath and Scout Law of the Boy Scouts of America; to develop Leadership, to promote Friendship, and to provide Service to humanity; and to further the freedom that is our national, educational, and intellectual heritage.”
The fraternity seeks to provide volunteer services in communities, campuses, the fraternity itself, and the nation at large. Unlike many other fraternities, Alpha Phi Omega is a service fraternity, which means it does not allow its chapters to maintain fraternity houses where members can live.
