The History of Phi Delta Theta

Phi Delta Theta was founded on the campus of Miami University in 1848. Today, the fraternity is headquartered in Oxford, Ohio and has more than 185 active chapters and colonies throughout 43 states in the U.S., as well as in five canadian provinces. Throughout its history, the fraternity has initiated more than 251,000 brothers, and currently boasts 142,000 living alumni. The fraternity’s charter house corporations own more than 135 houses with a total valuation of more than $141 million.

Phi Delta Theta’s mission statement is “The cultivation of friendship among its members, the acquirement individually of a high degree of mental culture, and the attainment personally of a high standard of morality.” The fraternity’s official philanthropy is The ALS Association, which it took up after its alumni Lou Gehrig, died of the disease. Before adopting The ALS Association as its official cause, the fraternity had no named philanthropy. Today, branches all across the country work to raise money annually for the foundation.
