The History of Phi Kappa Tau

Since its inception in 1906, Phi Kappa Tau has established 157 chartered chapters, 90 active chapters, and initiated more than 4,700 collegiate members. The fraternity’s mission statement is "To champion a lifelong commitment to brotherhood, learning, ethical leadership and exemplary character."

Initially, Phi Kappa Tau was founded as a non-fraternity association designed to give the non-fraternity men at Miami University a voice in the political affairs taking place on campus. Over time, however, the fraternity adapted and, since 1916, has been a member of the North-American Interfraternity Conference.

The fraternity’s official Philanthropy is SeriousFun Network, which was founded by Paul Newman, a Phi Kappa alumni. The network seeks to provide seriously ill children with recreational experiences designed to help them cope with their illnesses and enjoy a break from their day-to-day routines. Since the philanthropy’s inception, it has served more than 732,306 children and their families from more than forty countries.

Phi Kappa Tau’s official colors are Harvard Red and Old Gold.
