The History of Sigma Nu

Sigma Nu is 148 years old, and has more than 230,000 collegiate members and 279 chapters. Its current headquarters are in Lexington, Virginia, and its mission statement is as follows: “To develop ethical leaders inspired by the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth. To foster the personal growth of each man’s mind, heart, and character. And to perpetuate lifelong friendships and commitment to the fraternity.”

The fraternity has graduated several notable brothers, including James Frank Hopkins, Bob Barker, host of “The Price is Right,” Joe Buck, notable American sportscaster, James Dean, Harrison Ford, a famous American actor, Jon Hamm, star of Mad Men, where he played Don Draper, and Richard Lester, an American film director.

The fraternity is also the home of William Yates, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1945. He is the inspiration for the formation of Sigma Nu Inc., Educational Foundation, which was the first iteration of the fraternity. The name was later changed to "Sigma Nu Educational Foundation, Inc." Today, the foundation works with collegiate members to offer financial aid and to develop an ongoing and long lasting leadership program that helps support and uplift incoming brothers and promote a lifetime of achievement, brotherhood, and success in a variety of fields and pursuits.
