The History of Theta Chi

Theta Chi was founded April 10, 1856 on the campus of Norwich University in Norwich, Vermont. It’s a member of the North American Interfraternity Conference and has a base of more than 234 chapters, 8,000 collegiate members, and 184,000 lifetime members. The motto of the fraternity is “an assisting hand.”

Today, Theta Chi exists throughout the U.S. and Canada, and encourages its undergraduate members to take part in a large selection of leadership organizations, including Phi Beta Kappa, NCAA Athletics, and Omicron Delta Kappa. The fraternity officially supports the Wounded Warrior Project, The American Red Cross, Relay for Life, The Children’s Miracle Network, Habitat for Humanity, and a large selection of small nonprofits and organizations that work to support soldiers deployed overseas and their families.

The fraternity has graduated many distinguished alumni, including members of the armed service such as Captain James M. Burt, Purple Heart Recipient during World War II and Edward Bancroft Williston, Medal of Honor Recipient during the Civil War. Academy-Award Winning Director Steven Spielberg is also a graduate of the fraternity, as is Charles Addams, cartoonist for The New Yorker, Edgar Buchanan, actor, Phil Vassar, country music star, Luke Hancock, NCAA Forward, and Alan K. Saunders, Offensive Coordinator for the St. Louis Rams.
