Proud to Be Greek Wednesdays - June 13th, 2018

The lifelong bonds you form, the communities you serve, and the invaluable lessons you learn are all part of an unforgettable Greek organization experience. Joining a brotherhood or sisterhood is an honor and a privilege, and with it comes social awareness and responsibility. Each week we are going to be featuring an essay written by a fraternity/sorority member to highlight how Greek life has had a positive impact. Goosebumps and Confidence My entire life I stereotyped Greek affiliation based on what I had heard in the media and seen in movies. I was convinced that I was never going to be involved in what seemed to be such heinous organizations. I did not go through the formal recruitment process before my freshman year. It was to my amazement that my second semester of freshman year I would be a newly initiated member of the Sigma Tau chapter of Kappa Delta. My life has never been the same since that day and I am blessed to say that Kappa Delta has given me the most genuine relationships I can imagine, an incredible leadership experience, and has invoked in me a confidence that I never knew I needed. My entire life I stereotyped Greek affiliation based on what I had heard in the media and seen in movies. After my first semester of college I realized that if I wanted to get the most out of my college experience and develop into the person I wanted to become, I was going to have to take a few calculated risks. After analyzing my options, I concluded that a sorority wouldn’t be a terrible idea. After completing informal recruitment at Kappa Delta, I felt like I met a group of women that I wanted to be around that would inspire and push me to be the best version of myself. The women and fraternity men that I have been blessed to know mean the world to me. They truly bring out the best in me through their love, support, and genuine personalities. Kappa Delta has done its job by giving me the best friends I have ever had. When people say that Kappa Delta is for a lifetime I truly believe it because I cannot imagine any stage of my life without the women that mean the most to me. I was lucky enough to serve on council as VP-Finance. While serving in this position, I attended Kappa Delta’s National Convention that was held in Phoenix, Arizona. At this convention, I met hundreds of other Kappa Delta active members and alumnae. This experience showed me the magnitude of Kappa Delta and how many women the organization has positively impacted. To this day, it gives me goosebumps thinking about all the women that have experienced friendships, leadership, and have been immersed with confidence the way I have. Lastly, Kappa Delta has impacted my personal life by invoking in me confidence I never knew I needed or wanted. I always thought that I was confident, but after being impacted by Kappa Delta I have not only accepted my insecurities, but also have learned to love them because they make me unique. Confidence in women starts when they are little girls. It has been a privilege to be able to work with Girl Scouts and build confidence in them at a young age. Self-love is now something that I cherish and will potentially turn into a career. Being physically and mentally healthy is crucial in living a confident and happy life. I never thought that being Greek affiliated would have such a positive impact in my life. It is crucial that the positive aspects of Greek life are being displayed in the media. Greek life positively changes lives and seeing how far I have come I wouldn’t change a thing about my experience. The ups and downs have developed me into the person I am today and I love who she is. Thank you, Kappa Delta, for changing my life.
