The group is considered a social fraternity and is one of the five largest international fraternities in the world. There are currently 318 active chapters and colonies of Kappa Sigma in North America alone. The fraternity is known for having a large endowment and unparalleled fundraising capabilities.

The History of Kappa Sigma

Kappa Sigma was founded December 10, 1869 on the camps of the University of Virginia, although many scholars claim its roots actually stretch back much further than that. According to many, Kappa Sigma actually evolved from an ancient society known as Kirjath Sepher, which was founded at the University of Bologna in 1395.

With more than 318 active chapters and upwards of 282,000 lifetime members, Kappa Sig is one of the largest fraternities in the nation. Built on the traditions of honor, brotherhood, philanthropy, and achievement, Kappa Sigma is known for being active in charitable causes. In fact, the fraternity has donated upwards of $5 million to undergraduate brothers since the year 1948. In a single year (2012), Kappa Sigma fundraised more than $1 million for its various philanthropic causes, which include A Greater Cause and the Military Heroes Campaign.

Notable alumni from the fraternity include Martin C. Petersen, former Deputy Executive Director of the CIA, Jimmy Buffett, Chris Harrison of The Bachelor, Chip Gaines, of the popular HGTV show Fixer Upper, Ted Turner of TNT, TBS, and CNN, Robert Redford, and Edwin Hubble, the namesake of the Hubble Space Telescope.
