The History of Pi Kappa Alpha

Pi Kappa Alpha was founded at the University of Virginia in 1868. The fraternity’s vision statement is “Pi Kappa Alpha will set the standard of integrity, intellect, and achievement for our members, host institutions, and the communities in which we live.” The organization’s official publication is Shield & Diamond.

Founded by six graduate students, Pi Kappa Alpha was not originally an sectional fraternity, but it became one by constitutional provision in 1889. In 1909, the fraternity went from being a southern fraternity to a national organization.

Throughout the years, Phi Kappa Alpha has graduated dozens of notable members, including Richard J. Seitz, Lieutenant General in the U.S. Army, John A. DiBiaggio, president of Tufts University, John Lloyd Newcomb, 2nd President of the University of Virginia, and Rick Dees, host of The Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Countdown.

Known for its commitment to scholarship and leadership, Pi Kappa Alpha will continue uplifting and supporting its members for years to come.
