The History of Sigma Sigma Sigma

Tri Sigma was founded April 20, 1898 on the campus of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. The campus was the first in the state to provide teacher education, and Tri Sigma was founded by eight female students studying to become teachers. Dedicated to the ideals of friendship, achievement, and diversity, Sigma Sigma Sigma strives to provide its members with a lifelong sorority experience and a lifestyle rich in high standards.

Represented by the official colors of purple and white, Sigma Sigma Sigma remains active in non-profit organizations and philanthropies around the country. Its official philanthropy is the robbie Page Memorial, which was established after the son of Tri-Sigma’s president died from polio in 1951. Today, the memorial works to support polio research and vaccine trials in the hopes of finding a cure for the disease.

Notable Tri Sigma alumnae include Mary Rhodes Russell, a Supreme Court Judge in Missouri, Carrie Underwood, American Idol winner and country music star, Valerie Gatto, Miss Pennsylvania 2014, and Billie Letts, prominent author.
