The History of Phi Kappa Sigma

Phi Kappa Sigma is sometimes called “Phi Kap” or “Skullhouse,” thanks to the skull and crossbones on both the fraternity’s coat of arms and its badge.

Founded by Dr. Samuel Brown and his friend Wylie Mitchell, Phi Kappa Sigma’s motto is “equal to the stars in endurance.” Like other fraternities, Phi Kappa Sigma is dedicated to the concepts of brotherhood and achievement, and has graduated many notable members in its time.

Some of these members include Roger B. Chaffee, the NASA astronaut who was killed in Apollo 1, Skip Bayless, sports journalist and ESPN anchor, John Curley, editor of USA Today and former head of Gannett News, Tom Wolfe, author of The bonfire of the Vanities, Frank McGuire, head basketball coach at the University of SOuth Carolina, Lewis F. Powell, Jr., former Supreme Court Justice, James G. Roche, 20th Secretary of the Air Force, David Nolan, founder of the U.S. Libertarian Party, and John A. McCone, CIA director during the Cold War.
